Astro vs Next.js: Which Should Your Agency Choose in 2025?

We've built with both. Here's an honest comparison from the trenches — performance, DX, and the projects each framework is truly built for.

We've shipped production projects with both Astro and Next.js in the past two years. Here's our honest take on when to reach for each one.

The core difference

Astro ships zero JavaScript by default. It's built on the "islands" architecture — static HTML with interactive components only where you actually need them. This makes it extraordinary for content-heavy sites where performance is critical and most of the page doesn't need interactivity.

Next.js is a full React framework with flexible rendering strategies: SSG, SSR, ISR, and client-side rendering. It shines on applications where data freshness, auth, and complex client interactions matter more than raw performance.

When to choose Astro

Marketing sites, agency portfolios, blogs, documentation, landing pages — anything where the primary goal is fast loading and SEO. Astro's output is lean HTML with excellent Core Web Vitals almost by default. We use it for client sites where page speed directly impacts conversions.

When to choose Next.js

SaaS dashboards, e-commerce platforms, apps with real-time data, anything requiring auth and personalisation. The React ecosystem and deployment infrastructure (especially on Vercel) are unmatched for application development.

The honest verdict

For most agency client sites in 2025, we reach for Astro first. The performance baseline is simply better, and clients see the results in rankings and conversion rates. For anything with significant app functionality, Next.js is still our tool of choice.
