SEO for New Websites: How to Rank on Google When You're Starting From Zero
A brand-new website has no authority, no backlinks and no history. Here's the practical 90-day SEO plan we use to get new small-business sites indexed and ranking.
Launching a new website feels like opening a shop on a street nobody has heard of. Google does not know you exist yet, it has no reason to trust you, and your competitors have years of head start. The good news: new sites can rank, and often faster than people expect, if the first 90 days are spent on the right things in the right order.
Weeks 1–2: Make sure Google can actually find you
Before content, before links, confirm the basics. Set up Google Search Console and verify your domain. Submit your XML sitemap. Use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for your homepage and your most important service pages. Check that nothing is accidentally blocking crawlers: a leftover "noindex" tag from staging or an overly strict robots.txt file is one of the most common reasons a new site never appears.
At the same time, create or claim your Google Business Profile if you serve a local area. For many small businesses, the Map Pack will deliver leads long before organic rankings do.
Weeks 2–4: Target keywords you can realistically win
A new site will not rank for "web design" or "best restaurant" in its first year. It can rank for specific, lower-competition phrases with clear intent. Think "wedding photographer in Cagayan de Oro" rather than "photographer", or "how much does a commercial aircon cleaning cost" rather than "aircon".
Build a list of 15–25 of these long-tail terms. Each core service gets its own dedicated page targeting one primary phrase. One page, one intent. Cramming every service onto a single page is the fastest way to rank for nothing.
Weeks 4–8: Publish content that answers real questions
Look at the questions customers ask you on the phone, over Messenger and in person. Each recurring question is a potential article. Write the most genuinely useful answer on the internet for that question, with specifics: prices, timelines, steps, mistakes to avoid.
Consistency matters more than volume. Two strong articles a month for six months beats twelve thin ones in a single burst. Link every article back to the relevant service page so the authority you earn flows to the pages that make money.
Weeks 6–12: Earn your first trustworthy links
Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals, and new sites have none. Start with the links you can get honestly and easily: local business directories, your chamber of commerce, suppliers and partners who list their clients, industry associations, and local news coverage of anything genuinely newsworthy you do.
Avoid anyone selling "1,000 backlinks for ₱2,000". Those links are worthless at best and can trigger a penalty at worst. Ten relevant, real links will do more than a thousand spammy ones.
Technical foundations that give you an unfair advantage
Many established competitors are running slow, bloated sites built years ago. A new site that loads in under two seconds, passes Core Web Vitals, works perfectly on mobile and uses clean heading structure starts with an edge. Google has said page experience is a tiebreaker; for a newcomer competing on long-tail terms, tiebreakers matter.
What to expect, and when
Realistically: indexing within days to a couple of weeks, first impressions for long-tail terms within one to two months, and meaningful traffic from organic search in three to six months, depending on competition. Track progress in Search Console by watching impressions, not just clicks. Rising impressions mean Google is testing you, and clicks follow.
If you are still on the starting line without a fast, SEO-ready site, our 7-Day Website Package gives you the technical foundations above from launch day, so your 90-day clock starts immediately.
