7 Signs Your Business Website Needs a Redesign
Is your website quietly costing you customers? From slow load times to embarrassing mobile layouts, here are seven clear signs it's time for a redesign.
Websites age faster than most business owners realise. Design trends move, technology improves, customer expectations rise and your business itself evolves. A site that felt modern four years ago can now be actively turning customers away. Here are seven signs it is time for a redesign rather than another patch.
1. It looks broken or awkward on a phone
Open your site on your phone right now. If you have to pinch to zoom, if buttons are too small to tap, if text runs off the screen or menus do not work properly, you have a serious problem. Most of your visitors are on mobile, and Google evaluates the mobile version of your site first. A poor mobile experience is the single most common reason we recommend a redesign.
2. It takes more than three seconds to load
Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is in the red, visitors are leaving before they ever see your offer. Older sites built on heavy themes and loaded with plugins often cannot be made fast without rebuilding the foundations.
3. You are embarrassed to share the link
This sounds unscientific, but it is one of the most reliable signals. If you hesitate before giving your website to a potential client, or you tell people "just check our Facebook instead", your website no longer represents the quality of your business. Your customers notice the same gap.
4. It no longer reflects what you actually do
Businesses evolve. You may have added services, dropped others, moved upmarket or changed your target customer. If your website still describes the business you were three years ago, it is attracting the wrong enquiries and confusing the right ones. Small edits rarely fix this; the structure itself usually needs rethinking.
5. It is not generating enquiries
A website that gets traffic but no calls, form submissions or bookings has a conversion problem. Common causes include unclear messaging, no obvious call to action, forms that are too long, missing trust signals like reviews, and pages that do not answer the questions customers actually have. A redesign focused on conversion can often double enquiries from the same traffic.
6. You cannot update it yourself
If changing a price, adding a photo or posting an announcement requires emailing a developer and waiting a week, your site is working against you. A modern site should let you edit everyday content easily, or come with a support arrangement that makes updates fast and painless.
7. It is built on outdated or insecure technology
Sites running on old PHP versions, abandoned themes or plugins that are no longer maintained are security risks. Browser warnings about insecure connections, missing SSL certificates or old Flash-era elements are visible signs. Invisible ones, like unpatched vulnerabilities, are more dangerous.
Redesign or refresh?
If you recognised one or two minor signs, a refresh may be enough: new imagery, tighter copy, a faster host. If you recognised three or more, especially mobile, speed or conversion problems, a full redesign will almost always deliver a better return than continued patching.
