7 UX Mistakes That Are Quietly Killing Your Conversion Rate

Most conversion problems aren't about copy or offers — they're about friction. Here are the design errors we see most often in audits.

When a client comes to us with poor conversion rates, the first thing we do is a UX audit. Nine times out of ten, the problem isn't the offer — it's friction. Here are the most common mistakes we find.

1. No clear visual hierarchy

Users scan, they don't read. If your page doesn't have a clear primary action — one thing you most want visitors to do — they'll default to doing nothing. Every page needs a single, unmistakable CTA that stands above the rest.

2. Forms that ask too much

Every additional field in a form reduces completion rates. Ask only for what you actually need at this stage of the relationship. Name and email to start. Everything else can wait.

3. Mobile-hostile interactions

Hover states that don't work on touch. Tap targets under 44px. Horizontal scrolling. These aren't "nice to have" — they actively drive users away on the majority of your traffic.

4. Slow loading on real devices

Your site feels fast on your broadband-connected MacBook. Try it on a mid-range Android on 4G. Then check your bounce rate on mobile in Analytics. The correlation is usually undeniable.

5. Trust signals buried or absent

Testimonials, case studies, client logos, certifications — these should be visible before you ask for commitment. Placing them after your CTA is too late.

6. Inconsistent design language

When buttons look different on different pages, when spacing is arbitrary, when colours feel random — users unconsciously sense a lack of care. It erodes trust before they've read a word.

7. No feedback on interaction

What happens when I click this button? Did the form submit? Did my cart update? Feedback states — loading indicators, success messages, error explanations — are not optional UI flourishes. They're table stakes.
